Abdominal pain is a common complaint, often benign, but it can sometimes point to a more serious underlying issue.
Left-Sided Pain
Pain in the lower left abdomen is frequently linked to diverticulitis or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Upper left abdominal pain could be related to conditions like pancreatitis, gastritis, stomach ulcers, an enlarged spleen, kidney problems, heart issues like angina or pericarditis, or lung infections like pneumonia.
Right-Sided Pain
Lower right abdominal pain is often a sign of appendicitis. Upper right pain may involve the liver (such as hepatitis or liver cancer), gallbladder issues (gallstones or inflammation), right kidney problems, or a duodenal ulcer.
When to See a Doctor
You should see a doctor if your pain is severe, persistent, or recurring—especially if it’s accompanied by symptoms like vomiting, dehydration, blood in stool or vomit, difficulty breathing, jaundice, pregnancy, or unexplained weight loss.
In case of sudden, intense pain or symptoms that quickly worsen, seek emergency medical attention right away.
