Markle, 43, opened up about a previously unknown “life or death”—as Wolfe described it—health struggle on the premiere episode of her podcast: postpartum preeclampsia.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition causing high blood pressure and high levels of protein in urine that can happen up to six weeks after giving birth. It can cause stroke, brain damage and even death if left untreated.

“It’s so rare,” Wolfe said, to which Markle added, “and so scary.”

Markle shares a son, Archie, 5, and a daughter, Lilibet, 3, with her husband, Prince Harry.

“You’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” the Duchess of Sussex recounted. “And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people —mostly for your children. But those things are huge medical scares.”

During their conversation, Markle did not share whether her postpartum preeclampsia experience happened after giving birth to Archie or Lilibet.

Thankfully, everything turned out OK in the end!
