Kate Middleton Reflects on Her Cancer Journey: “You Have to Find Your New Normal”
In January, Kate Middleton revealed that she was in remission after undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. The Princess of Wales, who became cancer-free last fall, has since spoken publicly about her experience and met with fellow cancer patients to offer encouragement and support.
Although Kate has slowly returned to the public eye—appearing at events like Trooping the Colour and other outings with Prince William—she’s still easing back into royal duties.
During a recent visit to Colchester Hospital in Essex on June 2, the mother-of-three opened up about the emotional toll of recovery. While spending time with patients and touring a therapeutic garden space designed for those receiving treatment, she spoke candidly about the challenges that followed her medical care.
“You put on a sort of brave face during treatment,” she said. “But once it’s over, you expect to return to normal—when actually, the time after treatment is really, really difficult.”
Kate explained that patients often find themselves between two worlds: no longer under constant medical supervision, yet not fully able to resume their regular routines. “You’re not necessarily part of the clinical team’s care anymore, but you’re also not functioning like you used to at home,” she shared. “Having someone to guide you through that transitional phase is so valuable.”
Describing the experience as “life-changing,” the Princess added, “You have to find your new normal—and that takes time. It’s a rollercoaster, and it’s not always smooth. But the reality is, you go through hard times.”
According to People magazine, Kate’s visit and honesty resonated with many patients and staff, as she praised healthcare workers for their dedication during her treatment.
Behind the scenes, sources say that Kate and William have taken the experience as a moment to reevaluate their lives and responsibilities. A friend of the couple told the Daily Mail that the ordeal has “changed” Kate and given them both a new outlook. “Family and their children are still at the heart of everything,” the source shared.
While the royal couple remains devoted to public service, they’re working on creating a balance between duty and parenting. “Everyone is adjusting the dial,” said one insider.
Another friend added that Kate has no choice but to take a step back and reassess priorities. “She’s looking ahead with hope and a renewed appreciation for life.”
Although Kate is not fully back to her old routine, there are signs that could change in the months ahead. The same friend mentioned “major shifts” happening behind the scenes, hinting that both Kate and William are refining their roles and building their teams—possibly in preparation for their eventual future as king and queen.
“They’re really finessing what works and what doesn’t,” the source added.
