Martin Pistorius Shares the Moment He Awakened from Locked-In Syndrome

Martin Pistorius, the “Ghost Boy,” Recalls the Moment He Regained Awareness After Years Trapped in Silence

Martin Pistorius, famously known as the “Ghost Boy,” has shared the astonishing moment he became fully conscious after spending years locked inside an unresponsive body.

At just 12 years old, Martin — a bright, tech-enthusiastic child — began to suffer from a mysterious illness that started with flu-like symptoms and quickly progressed into total physical shutdown. He lost the ability to move, speak, or respond, and doctors wrongly assumed he had no cognitive function. His parents were told he wouldn’t recover and advised to care for him at home until his expected death.

By the age of 16, Pistorius had regained full consciousness — but remained completely paralyzed, unable to communicate his awareness. He lived in this terrifying state of “locked-in syndrome” for eight years. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition causes total bodily paralysis while preserving full mental clarity and cognitive ability.

In his memoir Ghost Boy, Pistorius recounts a devastating moment during this time: his mother, exhausted and heartbroken, once said aloud, “I hope you die,” not knowing he could hear her. “The rest of the world felt so far away when she said those words,” he later reflected.

He told LADbible that around his 16th birthday, he became aware of people discussing his facial hair and debating whether or not to shave him. “It was frightening and confusing,” he said. “Despite having no memories or sense of a past, I felt like a child — but they were talking about a man.”

One turning point came from his deep frustration with the children’s show Barney, which played endlessly. “I cannot express how much I hated Barney,” he told NPR. The monotony drove him to reclaim some control — he began tracking time by watching the movement of shadows across the room.

Eventually, Pistorius found a way to communicate again, first through subtle signals and later with the help of a voice synthesizer. His long and painful journey back to the world was fueled by an unwavering resilience.

Today, he lives in England with his wife, Joanna. Reflecting on his experience, he credits love as the force that carried him through. “I’d experienced [love] as a boy and man, as a son, brother, grandson, and friend,” he wrote. “Now it was lifting me closer to the sun than I ever thought I would fly.”
