Miley Cyrus Reveals Rare Voice Condition Behind Her Iconic Sound
Miley Cyrus has opened up about a rare medical condition that’s been quietly shaping one of her most defining traits—her unmistakable voice.
In a revealing conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music on May 21, the “Flowers” singer shared that she has Reinke’s edema, a condition where fluid accumulates in the outer layer of the vocal cords. This diagnosis offers new insight into the evolution of her signature raspy tone.
Long gone is the bright, polished voice of her Hannah Montana days. In its place, Miley’s vocals have matured into a deeper, textured sound that blends raw emotion with a rebellious edge—perfectly suited for her rock-infused anthems and heartfelt ballads.

While fans have admired her distinct vocal style for years, few knew there was a medical explanation behind it—until now.
“I have Reinke’s edema, which is caused by vocal cord abuse,” she explained. “Being 21, staying up all night, drinking, smoking, and partying after shows didn’t help. But honestly, my voice has always sounded this way because of how my body is built.”
Now 32, Miley also revealed she has a large polyp on her vocal cords that contributes to her unique tone. Despite the risks it poses, she’s chosen not to remove it.
“That polyp gives me so much of the tone and texture that define me,” she said. “Surgery could take that away. I’m not willing to wake up with a different voice.”
These vocal challenges have made performing particularly demanding. “It’s like running a marathon with ankle weights,” she described.
Miley’s mother, Tish Cyrus, often notices when her daughter’s voice is worn out. “Sometimes I’ll call her at the end of the day, and she’ll say, ‘You sound like you’re talking through a radio,’” Miley said. “That’s when I know I’m pushing it too far.”
Because of these physical limitations, Miley has steered away from lengthy tours. Instead, she’s found other ways to connect with fans. On May 30, she’s releasing her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, alongside a companion film of the same name.
“This film is my version of touring,” Miley explained. “I want people to experience the music in a way that feels just as intimate and powerful as a live show.”
Despite the challenges, Miley remains fully in control of her artistry—choosing authenticity over perfection, and connection over convention.
