At just 17 years old, Sahli Negassi from West Orange, New Jersey, has accomplished what many students across the country can only dream of — a perfect 1600 score on the SAT. This rare feat places him in the top 1% of test-takers nationwide and has drawn attention not only for the achievement itself, but for the inspiring journey that led him there.

What makes Sahli’s story even more remarkable is that he had no formal preschool education. Rather than starting his academic journey in structured classrooms at an early age, Sahli carved out his own path through a combination of grit, discipline, and a love for learning.
“I didn’t go to preschool,” Sahli said in an interview. “But my parents always encouraged me to be curious and independent. I used whatever tools I could find to teach myself.”
One of those tools was Khan Academy — a free, online learning platform that has become increasingly popular among students preparing for standardized tests. Sahli credits the site as a crucial part of his SAT prep. “Khan Academy helped me identify my weaknesses and target them directly. I followed a schedule, practiced consistently, and kept pushing myself.”
In addition to his SAT studies, Sahli maintains a rigorous academic schedule filled with AP courses, all while participating in several extracurricular activities. Teachers and peers alike describe him as humble, focused, and eager to help others. He’s active in his school’s robotics club, mentors younger students, and plays on the varsity tennis team.
“He’s one of the most dedicated students I’ve ever met,” said one of his teachers at West Orange High School. “But what stands out most is his kindness and willingness to lift others up along the way.”
Sahli’s story is a powerful reminder that academic success isn’t limited to those with the most resources or traditional starts. With dedication, strategic planning, and access to open educational tools, students can overcome obstacles and reach their highest potential.
As for his future, Sahli has his eyes set on studying engineering or computer science at one of the nation’s top universities. But for now, he’s taking a moment to enjoy the results of his hard work — and encouraging others to believe in their ability to do the same.
“Never let your circumstances define your limits,” he said. “With the right mindset and effort, anything is possible.”
