The federal sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs began Monday morning in New York, with The View co-host and former federal prosecutor Sunny Hostin present in the courtroom. Drawing from her background in prosecuting sex crimes and human trafficking, Hostin described the case as the most unsettling of her career.
“This is squarely within my area of expertise,” Hostin said during Tuesday’s Hot Topics segment on The View. “And I have to say, it’s probably the most disturbing case I’ve ever encountered.”

That said, Hostin also praised Combs’ defense team for delivering “probably one of the best opening statements I’ve heard.” She noted that their strategy stood out by directly addressing Combs’ history of violence, rather than avoiding it.
“The defense’s theory of the case is that Sean Combs is violent, he is a complicated man, he has committed domestic violence,” Hostin recounted. “But this is a case about jealousy and infidelity and a money grab. And it’s also a case about consensual threesomes. They said there was no human trafficking — that this was all consensual. And it was very interesting.”
Hostin went on to commend the defense team for what she described as “probably one of the best opening statements I’ve heard,” specifically for acknowledging Combs’ violent behavior upfront, rather than trying to deflect or deny it.
She also observed Combs in court, describing him as appearing physically frail but mentally sharp and fully engaged, frequently passing notes to his legal team throughout the proceedings.
Still, Hostin raised questions about the strength of the charges, particularly the allegation of racketeering. “From what I can see at this point, it’s going to be a difficult case,” she said. “But federal prosecutors win 97% of their trials, and so there must be evidence to support these charges.”
